Background

Neisseria gonorrhoeae, commonly known as gonococcus, is a Gram-negative, obligate, fastidious, diplococcus bacterium that causes the sexually transmitted infection (STI) known as gonorrhea. This bacterium is strictly human-adapted, meaning it only infects humans and is almost always transmitted through sexual contact. Gonorrhea is characterized by its ability to cause urethritis in men and cervicitis in women, with symptoms such as pain or burning during urination, discharge from the penis, and sometimes pain in the testes.
